Feast

Gerhard Marcks-Haus, Brema, 2025

“Olaf Brzeski cordially invites you to an exquisite 8-course feast with accompaniments. This menu can be enjoyed in any order, offering a different taste experience each time. There is no dress code, but please note that the course served in the right wing of the museum should be enjoyed exclusively without shoes and, if possible, on all fours.”

The title Feast allows many different meals to be set on a single table, be they sculptures, installations, videos. Indeed, some of the works do pertain — in one way or another — to eating, being eaten, feeding, digestion or teeth, etc. I was taken by surprise myself to realize how these themes turn up in my work. The title also reflects my intention to create a rich, corresponding experi- ence that combines drama, horror, grotesque, lyricism perhaps, kitsch, pathos, even romance in the right balance, much as a multi-genre film does. That the exhibition is inspired by the cinema is most clearly shown by the vampire figures around the museum. I also consider the individual rooms to be scenes redacted from the exhibition as a whole. Generally, I would say that the exhibition follows the process whereby I sought to confront my fears and anxieties by turning to art.
